As temperatures begin to drop, homeowners across the UK are being urged to check the age and condition of their uPVC windows, with specialists warning that older models could be responsible for significant heat loss.
“Many homeowners assume that all uPVC windows are equally efficient, but that’s simply not the case,” says Colin Greenslade, founder of Colin’s Sash Windows. “Units installed before the early 2000s were made with thinner frames and less advanced glazing. They might look fine, but they often let far more heat escape than people realise.”
While uPVC windows remain popular for their affordability and low maintenance, models fitted before 2002 generally lack the insulation performance of modern versions or high-quality timber frames. Ageing seals, single air chambers, and outdated glass coatings can all contribute to rising winter fuel bills.
By contrast, today’s energy-efficient uPVC windows feature multi-chambered frames, low-E coatings, and tight weather seals that keep warm air in and cold air out. Proper installation is equally vital, as even the best windows can underperform if gaps are left around the frame.
“Upgrading older windows is one of the simplest ways to make a home warmer and more energy-efficient,” adds Colin. “It not only helps reduce heating costs but also makes rooms noticeably more comfortable during cold snaps.”
Experts recommend checking for condensation between panes, visible draughts, or frames that feel cold to the touch, all signs that replacement might be due. For many homeowners, upgrading before the peak of winter could mean noticeable savings on energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint.
